Ian Hamilton Finlay was a poet, artist and gardener. Above all he combined all these into the role of philosopher and commentator on the contemporary condition. The most significant area of his work is that of words ' words written or inscribed on objects as diverse as cards, books, and prints, words inscribed on stone or wood sculpture, in room installations and outside in the public or civic space.

Finlay's greatest achievement and legacy was his garden in the Pentland Hills south of Edinburgh, the garden he called Little Sparta, an essential visit for all those who love poetry, art and great gardens:
