To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
- 'To an athlete dying young'
By A.E Housman
In their first collaborative show - I WOULD BE WORRIED. - Joe Brown and Ben Urban explore the opposing nature of encounters that are formulated by notions of pleasure, desire, and attention. Using photography, drawing and sculpture their collaborative relationship is not simply cohesive but more nuanced and even competitive. Each artist’s individual need for attention is played out by demanding the viewer’s close scrutiny of both surface and materiality. Exploiting the formality and gallery conventions that exhibited work cannot be touched, while simultaneously tempting the viewer and even promoting physical contact the show hopes to leave its audience unfulfilled.
I WOULD BE WORRIED. is an exhibition by Goldsmiths graduates Joe Brown and Ben Urban for Deptford X Fringe 2017. This is the third year that Art Hub has given the Gallery to students or graduates to support emerging talent and promote opportunities for artists in early stages of their careers. This year the graduate takeover is supported by GreatArt.
