Following on from the huge success of its first solo exhibition The Art Lounge is proud to present the two person show ‘I USED TO DREAM IN BLACK AND WHITE' with Denis Whiteside and Ian Irvine. Both artists live in Salford and work from neo:studios in Bolton where they produce work that mostly involves printmaking processes, such as screen-printing and solar-plate etching. The show opens with a preview on June 7th, 7pm onwards and runs till July 15th, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun 7pm till late. Ian and Denis have a history of exhibiting together and are well-known and established artists. Their most recent collaborations have been at Gallery Oldham with the exhibition ‘On the Surface' and at Salford Museum & Art Gallery with ‘Notion Pictures'. The work of both artists has much in common responding to various aspects of popular culture — literature, music, films, language and art itself. There is humour in both, and a desire to find the right medium for any given idea; however, the artists have very different and contrasting visual styles. Whiteside's work using text and literary connections is often laced with irony and self-reference. Irvine works with found images to find new narratives by means of transformation. The phrase ‘I used to dream in Black and White' — sounding like it might have come from a poem or a song is from an earlier work by Denis Whiteside and was the inspiration for a new collaborative work based on old television test-cards, which anyone of a certain age will remember. But, the artists insist ‘this is not merely nostalgia, but an appropriation of something which exists in our collective memory which has been taken and given a new twist, and in a new medium — screen-print.'
