About

I Release My Colours: A Solo Exhibition by IJE
5th - 12th September 2020
Opening Night: Friday 4th September 6-9pm

This September, Surface Gallery welcomes back IJE, winner of last year’s open Chameleon: Contemporary Colour Exhibition, to celebrate her first solo exhibition, I Release My Colours.

I Release My Colours is an explosion of colour, documenting, reflecting on and inviting the viewer to explore IJE’s encounters and adventures in the UK landscape and beyond. The exhibition encompasses IJE’s breadth of practice over recent years: paintings large and small, worked in oils and acrylics with found objects, as well as photography, sculpture, installation and poetry. In addition, through soundscapes and film, visitors will have the opportunity to experience some of the activities that have formed part of the artist’s work.

In IJE’s words:
I am a mixed practice artist: I am a writer, a poet, an explorer, a painter, a photographer, a creator, a healer; I am a sculptor, an adventurer, a walker and a runner, a performer, a thinker, a catalyst. I look up into, I look down onto, I look through and on the face of things; I encounter, I touch, feel, remember, imagine and fabricate.

Artist Talk
Saturday 5th September, 2pm
IJE will talk about her diverse body of work, her processes and share glimpses of her “thought books”. These talks are informal and Ije welcomes a broad conversation and questions.

The Opening Night features a live performance from IJE. I Release My Colours takes place in the Main Gallery and Project Space, moving between 2D and 3D works, immersing the viewer into the places which exist between the artist and the world. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Peasantry.
