Golden Thread Gallery is excited to be presenting Phillip McCrilly’s first solo show in the project space of the gallery in January 2023.

About

Curated by Mary Stevens, the exhibition explores “gender socialisation, considered ideas around home, as well as the potential for a fulfilled queer life in a rural Irish context.” The work questions McCrillys own relationship with the post conflict period, intimacy and research into the connection of people and place.

Navigating itself between fixed research, stories of individual biography, and collective memory, my work recuperates overlooked histories and marginal figures.  Mobilising subjective instability, camp sensibility, fermentation, and personal experience, ‘I can never nail the days down’ traces historical networks of kinship and affection, offering ciphers for the voluble potential of the past.

P. McCrilly, November 2022

The exhibition explores tensions between public and personal spaces. Attention to detail and McCrilly’s aesthetic of ‘process driven’ work highlights a unique responsiveness and sensitivity to the nature of public spaces becoming personal.  I can never nail the days down is designed to challenge community memory and the associations we have with everyday spaces and objects. Known for being a chef and artist, McCrilly includes visual, edible and scented work.

Artist Bio

Phillip McCrilly is an artist and chef. As co-founder of the FRUIT SHOP artist collective, he is interested in the transgressive and interdisciplinary possibilities of food, hospitality and education. Considering cruising and foraging as likeminded deviant practices, his current research explores queer collective acts of land and property reclamation. Recent projects include Of Course (Catalyst Arts, 2022); Irish Modernisms (CCA Derry~Londonderry, 2021); and Jaunt (commissioned by Catalyst Arts and Goethe Institut London, 2020). In 2022 he was selected to produce major new work as part of the Platform Commissions programme for the 40th EVA International Biennial of Contemporary Art (2023).
