About
Hye Eun Kim was born in Korea and has just finished her PhD at London’s Royal College of Art. After years of working and teaching in the fashion industry in Korea, she came to London for her MA at the London College of Fashion.
Through a practice-led PhD in fashion womenswear, she became interested in the transition of garments. A garment is transformed from flat fabric into a three-dimensional object through making and wearing. Besides, by wearing a garment the personal body experiences a transition into the social body.
This exhibition is a journey to explore transition. Hye Eun has produced a collection of clothes and scarves which show the fabric’s transitional process. To start with, she simulates 3D spaces by displaying trompe-l’oeil figures. Then, she adds three-dimensional details on the fabric, making it look as though three-dimensional figures are coming out of it. The process of transition is shown through Hye Eun herself, as she makes a garment and wears it.
