An exhibition by two Scottish artists, as the second part of a project that started in Japan in 2018.
About
Hungry Ghost Engines was a two-person exhibition that brought together the work of Scottish artists Arabella Hope and Silas Parry, curated by Yoshihito Kawabata at Contemporary Art Space Osaka in October 2018.
Hungry Ghost Engines will be re-iterated at Edinburgh’s Patriothall Gallery in May 2019. Alongside the exhibition, the artists are giving two artists talks.
The artists both critique our environmental, political and social landscapes with a cheeky grin rather than a wagging finger. Their work has resonance on several levels; an ongoing connection to Japan, a playful use of materials, and a vibrant approach to colour.
The concept of hungry ghosts derives from Tibetan Buddhism, and is familiar across Asia. The hungry ghost describes humans caged by intense emotional needs - those consumed by greed and addiction in life, will be condemned to an endless search for satisfaction in the afterlife.
