Videotage and Denny Dimin Gallery are pleased to present Hong Kong: Tales of the City, a panorama of Hong Kong video art development showcasing artists across generations.
About
An Outlook of Hong Kong Video Art brought to New YorkIn our times when society and modern life are intensely transforming and evolving in the context of globalization, cities are developing in an increasingly similar pattern yet embracing differences in local culture and socio-political systems. Hong Kong and New York, regarded as the symbols of modern east and west respectively, not only demonstrate how world cities are progressing and sharing a more inclusive path forward but also facing common global challenges.
The exhibition will present various contemporary tales through the work of nine Hong Kong-based video artists, depicting and exploring how the two faraway places connect and interact across the west-east boundary in responding to major global issues concerning PUBLICNESS, EVERYDAYNESS, and QUEERNESS in the context of contemporary Hong Kong society.
Hong Kong Video Art: from Pioneers to Millennials
The exhibition brings together a selection of video artworks by Hong Kong artists, from video art pioneers active since the 1980s to artists born in the 1990s, reflecting the city’s video art development spanning over 30 years. From the video art pioneer Ellen Pau to mainstay media artists Chilai Howard and Lee Kai Chung, to emerging artists of the next generation Joseph Chen and Ip Wai Lung, the line-up paints a picture of the Hong Kong video art scene in light of how society has changed in the period.
The cross-cultural project comprises two video art exhibitions in two cities, Hong Kong and New York. The parallel exhibition TALES OF THE CITY - VIDEO ART IN HONG KONG AND THE U.S. will present ten talented American and Hong Kong artists under the theme of social and political life in a cross-cultural context. This exhibition will be held at the end of 2020 in Hong Kong with more details released later this year.
