With Holy 204 , the Egyptian sound artist Yara Mekawei is showing her first solo exhibition in Germany at the daadgalerie.
About
Using a variety of sounding sculptures from the 3D printer, she takes visitors on a journey into the mysteries of Sufism, which has fascinated her for years and inspires and shapes her research and artistic work.
Since 2014, Yara Mekawei has been working on a translation system for sounds heard in the background of Sufi texts. It uses a traditional, cryptographic method to encrypt and decrypt Arabic letters in the form of numbers. In Holy 204 , Mekawei processes Sufi poems by 10th- and 13th-century philosophers, Ibn al-Farid and All-Hallaj. Translated into combinations of numbers, these poems serve as the basis for her sound compositions and 3D sculptures - a translation process with which she not only adds another layer of meaning to the complex wisdom of the past, but also makes it tangible for the present.
With her translations and transformations between analogue and digital material, text and number, cipher and decipherment, past and future, as well as spirituality and rationality, Yara Mekawei poses the big questions of ethics in a very touching way, which have gained relevance in the present of the pandemic .
