Smith's drawings have a playful simplicity that is able to encompass both a rigorous examination of the world around her and an almost dreamlike quality, which makes her parks, gardens and street scenes at once instantly familiar and slightly sinister. Holland Park with it's labyrinthine passages and dominant victorian architecture is somewhere I regularly visit as a source for inspiration. I work directly from observation, en plein-air, making large mixed media works on site. It is my hope that I obtain something of the ebb and flow of city life in my work, whether that be on a bustling street or in a quiet leafy square, but ultimately it is the assimilation of movement and rhythm through my immediate environment that has some to underpin my work."
