About

Held in the gallery amongst Locke’s work, the pair will discuss his practice in relation to his fifth solo exhibition with Hales - a timely exploration of authoritarian power, migration and globalisation in a climate of increasing political uncertainty and heightened anxiety.

About Hew Locke

Born in 1959 in Edinburgh, UK, Hew Locke spent his formative years (1966-1980) in Guyana before returning to the UK to complete a BA in Fine Art at Falmouth University (1988), and an MA in sculpture at the Royal College of Art (1994). He lives and works in London.

Locke explores the languages of colonial and post-colonial power, how different cultures fashion their identities through visual symbols of authority, and how these representations are altered by the passage of time. These explorations have led Locke to a wide range of subject matters, imagery and media, assembling sources across time and space in his deeply layered artworks.
