The exhibition project of the artist Herbert Brandl (*1959 Graz, lives in Vienna), which was initially planned for summer 2019 at the Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien (KM– Graz), has been moved to summer 2020.

About

Reason for the rearrangement is a cooperation with the Kunsthaus Graz at the Universalmuseum Joanneum, which will lead to a coordinated, comprehensive presentation of the artist’s works: with joined forces, the two institutions will simultaneously open a large-scale retrospective on the 2nd of July 2020, including a new series of works by the artist. Different aspects of the artistic oeuvre will be displayed at the respective institutions in coordination with the two curators Barbara Steiner (head, Kunsthaus Graz) and Sandro Droschl (director, KM– Graz). The extensive show by the artist from Styria will range from a new body of works and previously less known older works, up to essential collections. The atmospheric color spaces, for which the artist turns form, color and light into material and method, and his rather conceptual works from the 1980s as part of the “Neue Wilde”, are known far beyond the Austrian borders and represented in collections across the world. The proposed exhibition survey will not only present large-format original productions by the Austrian artistic heavyweight, but attempts to conceive his works with a fresh perspective and in an international context. With this new survey of Herbert Brandl’s artistic work, the KM– and the Kunsthaus Graz are delighted to announce also a joint publication, which will honor the artist’s work beyond the exhibition project.

With his pictorial worlds, Herbert Brandl, who is regarded as one of the most established contemporary Austrian painters, creates atmospheric color spaces. Form, color and light as material and method of art have always been central to Brandl’s artistic work. Currently, he turns his attention also to concrete, at times even figurative creations. Even if not necessarily apparent, Brandl still names themes from his everyday life, problematic situations, experiences with death and fate as inspiration for his work. As part of his solo exhibition in Graz, he will work with themes of war and violence, with and in the space of the institution. Brandl will create an extensive original production, which will act as a media- and material-reflexive experiment, which marks a novelty in Brandl’s oeuvre. Contrary to this, previously never displayed sculptures and paintings from the early 80s will be presented.
