New to the University of Salford's art collections are two seminal short films, on show for one day only as part of the Manchester Weekender: Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey's Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore and Telephones by Christian Marclay (whose recent 24-hour artwork, The Clockà‚ won the Golden Lion at the 2011 Venice Biennale) Both pieces feature remixed footage but that's where the similarities stop. Marclay, an avant-garde DJà‚ back in the 1980s, linked together both colour andà‚ black-and-white Hollywood film clips to create his 1999 work Telephones.à‚ Using hundreds of film clips featuring well-known actors, including Cary Grant, Sean Connery, Meg Ryan and Humphrey Bogart, he constructed a bizarre, fast-paced narrative, with a rhythmic sound track crafted from the sounds of ringing phones, dial tones, the actors' voices and slammed down receivers Leckey also splices together existing footage, manipulating found videos of nightclubs, from northern soul to acid house, to create what has been described as the definitive view of British nightlife. But in stark contrast to the almost comic effect of Marclay's piece, Mark Leckey's work is a celebration of hedonistic club culture and an elegy to its passing A Manchester Weekender Event Open 12 - 3pm on 13th October
