A hedge can be the product of a structure set in motion a thousand or more years ago. A network of nature, a political barrier on fertile land, a corridor for wildlife, a folkloric path for witches; life teems, twists one against the other, the ages are marked by the addition of new species. Zachary Beer treats these forms as a natural calligraphy demarking the land, creating paintings that explore these intricate patterns, complex structures and synecdoche.
