Grasping the spirit of the Cornwall was Tom Henderson Smith's aim here, bringing to it his love for translating his experiences into paint, a hallmark of his art.
About
The essence, the spirit, of the place that is Cornwall: grasping these aspects became Tom Henderson Smith's aim in creating this collection. Taking carnival and folk themes, industrial heritage, distant moorland, secret wooded valleys and coastal forms, he brings to them all that loving attention and that relish for the act of translating visual experience into painterly values that has become a hallmark of his art. “The heart of Cornwall is not a place” a friend of the artist had told him when he was planning this collection. Even though Tom had moved to a central location in the Duchy eighteen months previously and had found fresh landscape inspiration there in the Vale of Lanherne, he found himself agreeing with his friend's statement. This exhibition therefore is the result of Tom's pursuit of an in depth view of the heart of Cornwall. Come and see if his view resonates with your own.
