Exhibition at Town Hall Arts: Hard Hats, Hi Heels and Her

22 February – 6 April 2019

Exhibition Preview: Thursday 21 February, 6-8pm

Town Hall Arts’ up and coming exhibition ‘Hard Hats, Hi Heels and Her’ showcases work by Jenna Fox and Nichola Rodgers, and explores the changed roles of women through sculpture, film and 2D artworks.

The exhibition, which runs from 22 February – 6 April, looks at the interaction of women to others, and to objects within the home and industry through two distinct bodies of work.

Jenna Fox explores how the objects in our homes define us, and how the roles and relationships of women in the home have changed. Using domestic objects and ornaments, she creates work that reflects back at us a whimsical look at the home as self.

Meanwhile Nichola Rodgers employs an untraditional approach to painting in her investigation of relationships between nature and culture, with an emphasis on the stereotypes of women within nature and the workplace.

Discussing the driving force behind ‘Hard Hats, Hi Heels and Her’, Rodgers comments:

I wanted to do this show for a few reasons, one being I don’t feel there are enough women only shows about women, and because I also don’t think that the maturer female emerging artists are taken seriously enough. I also love working with Jenna.

In speaking about the themes and styles within the exhibition Fox adds:

It's amazing how much has changed for women since the vote 100 years ago. ‘Hard Hats, Hi, Heels and Her’, explores women within the home and industry. At times the work is serious, other pieces are tongue in cheek, from the brutal to the kitsch, from the stripped bare to the embellished. The show is made, curated and hopefully celebrated by women.

‘Hard Hats, Hi Heels and Her’ is the second exhibition of the arts centre’s 2019 visual arts programme, which delivers exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing work by emerging and established professional artists. In discussing her decision to approach Town Hall Arts for an exhibition, Fox also comments:

We are delighted to have our show hosted at Town Hall Arts. The building is a wonderful listed building with beautiful architectural features. The gallery is a fabulous space with the upper roof joists exposed and excellent lighting for our work.  But, more importantly it is part of the community and encourages folk to engage with art and interact. As practicing artists we couldn't ask for more than that.

For visitors who would like to hear more about the work on show, there will be an opportunity to join the artists on Thursday 14th March, who will be in conversation with Town Hall Arts’ curator Katie Ackrill from 6.30pm. This event is free but we do recommend booking ahead to secure your space – www.townhallarts.co.uk or 01225 774306.

Entry to the exhibition is also free of charge.
