Heather Tobias is a mixed media artist.  She chose the title "Happenstance" for this exhibition because "art let’s me explore different mediums and find the happenstance in my studio and encounters that lead me to new paths."

What has been a seminal experience?

Getting my own studio and being able to play

How has your practice changed over time?

I have learned to be free to connect to what inspires me.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I am an actress.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

It is a warming feeling that people are moved by my work.

Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it?

I love working alone with possibly just the radio on. It is my sanctuary.

What research do you do?

I regularly visit art galleries and find inspiration from found objects. I find car boots and charity shops a great hunting ground.

Favourite or most inspirational place?

West Wales and coastlines

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Stop criticising myself and just play.

To be happy
