With her wall-filling numerical and typed works, Hanne Darboven undoubtedly belongs to the canon of contemporary art, and having taken part in four documentas she has made a lasting impact on the art world.

About

The Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn have recently dedicated two comprehensive retrospectives to Darboven. The exhibition that Crone presents during Gallery Weekend is directly linked to both shows. It too focuses on the concepts of “explanation” and “chronicles”, which for Okwui Enwezor, the director of the Haus der Kunst, describes the core of Darboven’s work.

Firstly, Crone presents the monumental work “Evolution Leibniz” (1986), which consists of 888 sheets of paper and has only been exhibited on one occasion, in the Sprengel Museum in Hannover in 1996. Secondly, early “Konstruktion” drawings from the 1960s will be presented, with which Darboven used to lay the foundation for her unique system of numbers and codes that described time and space. Typewriter works from the 1970s accompany these two bodies of work.

Together, the works on display give a condensed overview of the internal and external nature of Darboven’s conceptual art: to comprehend – and visualise - time and space as indivisible parameters and essential organizing principles of world events.
