About

DegreeArt opens 2012 with one of our most celebrated artists, Hannah Biscombe. Biscombe's arresting work combines the traditional photographic technique of photograms and blends it with the newest form of digital photo editing. Through the portraiture of small pets, rats, amphibians, and reptiles Biscombe creates magnificent abstract works that can only be described as radical. Biscombe's body of work primarily consists of rodents and contrary to their immediate acceptance by humans, are auspicious, positive, and associates with good fortune in many cultures. Her colour choices are bold and contemporary as she blends not only the physical reaction to colour but its symbolic meaning. Through her use of blue, Biscombe pays homage to Katsushkia Hokusai's original prints that have greatly influenced her work. Motivated by Francis Bacon, her animal sculptures parallel the twisted forms of painted figures, as well as the taxidermy aesthetic of Damien Hirst's most iconic work. Biscombe finds enjoyment in the meticulous process of making her work, capturing life and toying with the relationship between the sense of a chance original image and the complexities of the deliberate manipulation. Biscombe caters to all collectors by creating limited edition prints, one off pieces, and large - scale signature work.
