Hanmi Gallery is pleased to present at London Art Fair 2018 “Talk Together”, a project exploring the art of two international artists: Yingmei Duan and Aisha Abid Hussain.
About
Using and emphasizing their bodies as the fundamental medium to express their philosophies, Duan and Hussain build simple and basic scenarios, but rich in symbolism and gender criticism, intertwined with consciousness and unconsciousness. Within this scenic frame, objects and personalities are released from their habitual context. Through this new layout, the viewers can experience unexpected existential reflections. Challenging the boundaries between disciplines, they investigate and question the social foundations of everyday life.
Narrowing the gap between life and art, Duan’s work is subliminal: it encounters inter-human tensions, intangible ramifications, bonding body and psyche in time. A somnambulating state is the dream frame within which its performance is enclosed and developed. She underlines the psyche as an invisible but dominant aspect of the human experience. Hussain wants to subvert the traditional clichés related to Body/Gender and Self/Gender dichotomies. Her works reflect a force to explode, a desire to break free from something tightly knotted. Her belief is that the personal is political; therefore challenging traditional gender stereotypes through the use of her body as an expressive medium becomes her central focus.
