About

Selma Feriani Gallery is thrilled to be exhibiting a solo show of artwork by the Egyptian painter and decoupage artist Hani Rashed this month. Taking a contemporary spin on Pop Art themes, Rashed's artwork tackles the prosaic influence of Western media, particularly magazine and print based iconography, on Egypt's urban youth culture. Using a varied range of poster and magazine cuttings Rashed constructs witty collages of city and consumer life accompanied by haunting faceless figures, ironically representing monotonously ‘consumed' urban life. Each surface offers an alternative cross-cultural perspective, where Western images meet Egyptian sensibilities. Inspired by his work as a sound technician with Egyptian Television, but also by Egyptian traditionalism, Rashed has been working as a dedicated artist for only five years but his artwork has been selected for biennales in Dakar, Senegal and Cape Town, and in 2007 he was included at the Frieze art fair. He has been awarded first prize twice for painting and drawing at the Salon of Youth in Cairo. Selma Feriani gallery is showcasing a series of Rashed's work on cardboard featuring his infamous blank face clones and including iconic media images from London and Cairo.
