"Colors are the acts and passions of light." -- Goethe, Theory of Colors
About
Dec. 8 – Jan.12 -- Opening Reception Sunday, Dec. 8, 4:30-7pm
AV Ryan brings her video installation Half-Light to the Plus/Space. This work continues her investigations of the arc of the compass used to construct the cube. A negative shape from this geometry, a slender wing form, led the artist’s work from steel sculptures to wall reliefs to panel paintings. Half-Light continues these investigations. Light, space, movement and a wing-shaped piece of dichroic film instigate color happenings on the wall. The video is a record of these encounters at the vanishing edge of painting. At the same time, it brings light to the neighborhood during the dark times of the year.
AV Ryan is an artist and writer. Her sculpture has been exhibited in New York and Chicago. Her architectural projects include temple, which she built for the sculpture prairie at Art Farm Nebraska, and sol, which she built for the Plus/Space at FiveMyles. She has collaborated with lighting designer Linnaea Tillett on several month-long, all-night light installations in the FiveMyles Plus/Space. Her writing has been published in The Brooklyn Rail. She holds a BA from Princeton University and a BFA from Rutgers University. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
