From now until 15 April, we're lighting up the Old Street Digital Canvas with new artworks by young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
About
Despite the challenges of lockdowns, social distancing, and the Covid-19 pandemic, the artists in our #HackneyIsHome project have carried on creating new work. And we're delighted to announce their artworks are now being broadcast six metres high on the Old Street Digital Canvas in the heart of Shoreditch, London. The ten posters on the Digital Canvas have all been created by young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. These eight artists have been working closely with Autograph and youth media organisation Mouth That Roars, taking part in workshops and training, and earning a creative media qualification. Inspired by the different stories of people who have come to Hackney, the group has spent the past six months making photography and video reflecting on identity and belonging in our borough – asking what makes Hackney home.
For the Digital Canvas, the #HackneyIsHome artists wanted to create messages of hope for our current times. Having themselves recently arrived from countries including Congo, Djibouti, Afghanistan, Madagascar and Spain, the works they’ve produced celebrate Hackney and the many people who proudly call it home.
If you're in the Shoreditch area, see the display until 15 April 2021 at the Old Street Digital Canvas, located on Old Street roundabout London, EC1V 1JB.
