About

Father and son Peter and Andy Holden explore why birds build nests, why people steal eggs and why the bowerbird puzzled Charles Darwin in the exhibition 'Natural Selection'.

As part of a series of tours – including by Bill Oddie, Richard Wentworth and Andy Holden – Professor Tim Birkhead gives a guided walkthrough of the exhibition.

Tim Birkhead is a professor at The University of Sheffield where he teaches animal behaviour and the history of science. He is a Fellow of The Royal Society and his research has taken him all over the world in the quest to understand the lives of birds.

Much of his research concerns sperm competition in birds but he has maintained a long-term study of guillemots on Skomer Island since 1972.

His most recent books include Bird Sense (short-listed for the Royal Society Science Book prize) and The Most Perfect Thing: the Inside (and Outside) of a Bird's Egg (also shortlisted for the Royal Society Book Prize).

He is married with three children and lives in Sheffield.
