A speculative survey of body and its relation to garments, from the cave to the web.

About

Romance with Material
Flirt with Self
Adorn the World

The upcoming exhibition at The Hollows Townhouse on Bedford Ave in Williamsburg will take place throughout the building, spanning 10 galleries on 4 floors and outdoors space, The Hollows Eastyard, with a late night opening reception one day before New York Fashion Week.

Erote approaches the concept of garment as a means to frame the body, assumed as a catalyst for achieving affects, foremost in the Self, including design ideas from ancient times to very recent innovations, flattening Time, and treating each designer or the stylist as an individual who is in search for a pleasant functionality. Exhibited pieces are accessories that preserve one’s body and help the wearer communicate with the world and getting by in it.

Ruby Chishti achieves to feminize the little gold sequin dress as Vixole x Yuxi Cao captures the Pokémon at the feet. Stephanie Liu grasps the need of the nomad right from the core: hyradate and run. Mark Newport’s knit sweaters combine the heroic and the protective in the artist’s mother’s gestures, one in the form of masculine and vulnerable Donatello. Nitcha Fame Tothong’s Text-neck is a brilliant new jewelry device that will save our natural chic postures for years to come. The best bag possible, by Maison Martin Margiela from 2013 will be on view as well as two 2016 pieces in gold and silver by Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler. Lastly, Matthew Keff is taking over the outdoors runway at The Hollows Eastyard with his live animations, paired with Kiichiro Adachi’s light whirlpool. And a new telephone booth on the porch on Bedford Avenue.
