Group: Focus II: John Simpson

FORSTER is proud to present Group: Focus Il, the second part of the summer exhibition program, focusing on photography and printmaking by gallery and invited artists. On display are works by Ryan McClelland, Etienne Clément, Sanders Nicolson, and Rob Carter. The upstairs gallery will preview unique monotypes and two limited edition silkscreens by John Simpson, who is exhibiting at the gallery for the first time. 'John Simpson has a wonderfully fluent and flowing drawing style which lends itself particularly well to his chosen medium, monotypes. His control of this wayward process is remarkable, and this, combined with his sensitive and poetic imagination and his empathy with his subject matter produces powerful and inforgettable images.' - Gerald Laing Drawing on folk tale and myth, John Simpson's prints introduce you to humans, animals and fascinating hybrids. What is most exciting in what is laid before us is the suggested scenarios and behavior patterns between such beings. Removed of any background and favoring a monochrome pallet, on occasion Simpson introduces measured doses of vibrant red pigment on to the surface of his work — perhaps at an attempt to heighten our awareness of some unsettling happening or possibly to lure the viewer further into the already enchanting narratives. Simpson has exhibited in New York, Sao Paulo and widely throughout the UK. The recent Wonderland series was commissioned to appear alongside Sir John Tenniel's original woodblock prints and Salvador Dali's lithographs in Lewis Carroll's Yorkshire.
