Sutherland became an accomplished etcher whilst a student and during the 1920s he produced idyllic, visionary rural landscapes influenced by Samuel Palmer. After World War II, he returned seriously to printmaking with an output of about 150 prints, comprising lithographs, etchings, silk-screens, aquatints and collotypes. These prints typically demonstrated his interest in depicting natural, organic and geological forms such as tree roots, thorn bushes and rock formations often shown from foreshortened viewpoints and sometimes with hints of menacing human or animal like characteristics. An exhibition in association with the Goldmark Gallery.
