OPENING: THURSDAY, JULY 4, 2024, 6 PM–8 PM
7 PM: GERHARD RÜHM READS HIS NEW POEMS

DAS BILD UND SEIN BUCH – THE ARTWORK AND ITS BOOK:

two forms of narration, two forms of perception of the world. Whereas the observer of an artwork is mostly overwhelmed with an abundance of information that they attempt to decipher piece by piece, the book invites contemplation. The interplay of these two aesthetic dispositives thereby enables the connection between time and space. In this way, the traditional format of ‘exhibition’ is raised above itself, and interleaved in interdisciplinary fashion with other forms of artistic configuration in innovative ways.

With GERHARD RÜHM such interweavings and artistic transgressions immediately suggest themselves: the absolutely obsessive reader, who has at his command a massive library which, with everything from the classics up to most recent works, contains the entire western cultural history, has never settled on one specific genre in his aesthetic production: for more than 70 years he has been experimenting in the framework of the Wiener Gruppe, as well as beyond this with language, collage, and ‘poésie sonore’.

These might be found objects, furnished with text, from advertising, or manifestations of concrete poetry, where the word occasionally assumes the character of an empty signifier and, in printed alignment, organises itself into an abstract configuration. Typography and phonetic articulation – traditionally ancillary elements – gain autonomy. Language becomes porous, to the graphic and musical, to the visual and acoustic: borders are transgressed and new artistic fields are psychogeographically covered with ‘schreibmaschinenideogrammen’, ‘typocollagen’, ‘frottagen’, ‘schriftzeichnungen’, ‘briefbildern’ and ‘leseliedern’.

It is no longer about specifics of a genre, but instead about an all-over of the most varied sensory input which – sometimes cognitive, sometimes instinctive – artistically evokes a panoramic vision of a not yet conceived world beyond good and evil.

With Gerhard Rühm THE PICTURE AND ITS BOOK thereby unfolds a ‘glasperlenspiel’ that manifests itself on a variety of levels. ‘Lesen heißt durch fremde Hand träumen’, Fernando Pessoa once wrote. One could also reverse the formulation: ‘In der Betrachtung von Kunst zu träumen, heißt durch fremde Hand lesen.” (Thomas Miessgang, 2024, translation by Sarah Cormack)
