Renowned ensemble TAK presents back-to-back world premieres from top composers Mario Diaz de Leon and Lewis Nielson.
TAK is a quintet that delivers energetic and virtuosic performances of contemporary classical music. With performances described as “stellar” and full of “restless strands of ever shifting color and vigor,” the group frequently collaborates with video artists, installation artists, and experimental theater companies to create immersive concert experiences. TAK has worked with esteemed composers Mario Diaz de Leon, Lewis Nielson, Tyshawn Sorey, Sam Pluta, and David Bird, among others.
Mario Diaz de Leon is a composer and performer whose works have been described as "21st century chamber music that couples crystalline clarity with the disorienting turbulence of a sonic vortex” by The Wire Magazine. Mario’s influences range from composers Gyorgy Ligeti and Iannis Xenakis to free improvisation and underground metal styles. Recents projects include Bloodmist, a free improvisation group with fellow experimental practitioners Toby Driver and Jeremiah Cymerman, who celebrated the release of their debut album at Roulette in January. A Minnesota native, Mario grew up playing guitar in hardcore punk and metal bands before studying electronic music and composition at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He received his doctorate in music composition from Columbia University in 2013.
