Hinterland

* an area lying beyond what is visible or known.

“the strange hinterland where life begins and ends"

“I made this work at the tail end of a two year period of deep depression, which started in 2016. Between events in the world, along with personal/family issues, I found myself in a very dark and empty place. These images document this two year period.

A lot of the time when I was making the images I wasn’t sure what they meant. It was only after, when I looked back, that they started to make sense.”

Gary Russell is a London based artist who mainly works with  2D collage, using a photo copier to create his work. Russell’s work is inspired by music, folklore and dreams.

Russell has had solo exhibitions and groups shows at London’s Hoxton Hotel, Dalston Superstore, Rich Mix, and Curio Cabal. He has also participated in exhibitions and projects with The Ministry of Stories, Art Against Knives, and Talent House.

As well as London his work has been exhibited in New York City, Bulgaria’s music festival meadows in the mountains and the Vienna Art Showcase.
