Ventique Art Gallery is pleased to present London Geodes: The Beauty Inside, a new body of work by Matt Marga. This exhibition brings together Marga’s London Geodes and Galassia collections.

Inspired by the stars and milky way, the Galassia collection brings together the beauty and mystery of the night sky, reformulated in glass and crystal. Marga has been inspired by the beautiful yet relatively unknown phenomena of the Milky Way Galaxy; crystal clear glass represents the dark night sky, with the crystals representing shimmering, shining stars and constellations. The 80 x 125cm crystal and bronze glass pieces give a condensed yet infinite snapshot of the cosmos suspended within the piece; intimate yet cosmic, merging science with beauty and mystery.

The pieces are individually hand created: melted glass is formed and shaped, then crystals are sprinkled over the molten surface. Once dry, the crystals appear embedded into the glass, suspended inside, drawing parallels to the stars suspended in the night sky. Each piece hovers in front of the wall, adopting its colour, adding a new dimension to the transparent glass surface.

Each sculpture takes its name from a galaxy, constellation or star; the Italian translation adding an air of intrigue to the artwork, while also highlighting Marga’s heritage. This also serves as a reminder that although Marga’s perspective of the night sky in the Italian Alps may not be the same as the smog and light polluted night skies of London, the ethereal, shimmering stars are a constant the world over. The Galassia collection series captures a sense of awe and wonder that exists surrounding the night sky, and encapsulates how precious and beautiful the sky at night can be.
