About

What is »Fyodor's Performance Carousel«?

Nine performance artists occupy for nine days a stage-sized carousel. Every day, they pass five hours together. The carousel is composed of segments arranged like pieces of a cake. This gives each artist a proprietary, tiny space perfectly screened from that of the others. None of the performers knows what the others will show. Eight new performance works – seven solos and one duet – are presented, all focusing on the selfsame question: pregnancy.

Before the spectators enter the room with the carousel, they enter a “check-in chapel”, where they watch short video sequences of the performers speaking, in great detail, about an event in their lives, about how they were deeply concerned (and thus “pregnant”) about something in the past, about how they considered the issue in depth and prepared for it mentally.
And since a carousel must turn, it needs – in this case – volunteers from the audience to kick-start the performance. Home training equipment is available for this purpose: the intensity of the guests’ pedal strokes determines how the different stories bleed into each other, decides whether a turn of the carousel produces images, picture-puzzle overlaps or simply blurred borders – and whether the outcome will be a shared, physically experienced, creative act.
Russian-born performance artist, curator, writer, theatre director and filmmaker Fyodor Pavlov-Andreevich lives and works in São Paulo, London and Moscow. This is his first production in Austria.
