About Frequencies

Inspired by seeing graffitied wooden desks in a school in Colombia where he grew up, artist and alumni of Cardinal Pole Catholic School, Oscar Murillo, set up an experiment in 2013. He fixed blank canvases onto the desks in a few school classrooms, where they were left for the students to mark in any way they wanted.

Over the course of a term, the canvases were covered with doodles and drawings, names of friends and celebrities, messages and images. Each individual canvas tells its own story of dreams, desires, frustrations and restraints.

The experiment has grown into an immense project called Frequencies, with 40,000 individual canvases marked by over 100,000 students in 34 countries around the world.

All of the canvases are on exhibition this summer inside the Sports Hall of Cardinal Pole Catholic School. You are welcome to interact with the canvases in different ways and will find them stacked on shelves, hanging on the walls or displayed on a large digital screen.
