Recent paintings by Katya Granova in dialogue with monoprints by Simon Hodgkinson on the theme of distortion (historical-political-visual) featuring several works on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
About
Fractures of the Lens ties together the painterly practices of Katya Granova (@katyagranova) from Russia and Simon Hodgkinson from London. Their practices differ visually but are united by a common interest in post-truth and distortions of history.
The artists' differing cultural and artistic backgrounds engender different approaches - while the monotypes of Hodgkinson explore layering of visual information and a searching for truth, Granova’s manner of painting combines a moment of objective history contained in enlarged vintage photographs with the physicality of painterly gestures and her own corporeal presence. Both artists are emotionally affected by current politics and address this directly or indirectly in their work.
