Forty-two | Positions after three and a half years at Gallery Wolf & Galentz

Dear friends of the arts,
forty-two months ago we opened our first exhibition in the new gallery Wolf & Galentz. For us, these have been very exciting months, with a lot of interesting exhibitions and conversations and beautiful, sometimes very insightful moments. We cordially invite you to our 21st exhibition, in which we present artists who have become more closely associated with our gallery. Works from four generations will be presented, with a focus on self-portraits. We are pleased to once again exhibit the expressive self-portrait of Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt (b. 1932) alongside several Typewriting prints by this artist.

In particular, we would also like to commemorate several artists whom we knew and whose work we value, but who have sadly already passed away.

On 10 October 2022, the Berlin artist Gisa Hausmann (1942–2015) would have celebrated her 80th birthday, in the exhibition we wish to commemorate and honour her life and work by presenting her self-portraits from various creative periods.
The East German graphic artist Jürgen Wittdorf (1932–2018) would have turned 90 this year. In addition to woodcuts, we are also showing an impressive pen and ink drawing by him.
From Joachim Pohl (1947–2022), artist and art educator, who invited us to take over his gallery space in 2018 and was happy to offer advice, we show a sculpture and a material assemblage. Ira Schneider (1939–2022) was one of the pioneers of video art. He lived in Berlin for more than three decades until he returned to New York shortly before his death. We are showing several of his photographs from the series Reflections.
We would also like to commemorate the Swiss social scientist, writer and visual artist Urs Jaeggi (1931–2021). We are showing a minimalist work from the collection of our artist colleague Jovan Balov next to a hyper-realistic portrait that Jovan painted of Urs Jaeggi.
Serigraphs from the Hard Edge Compositions by Jürgen Peters (1936–1997) will be on view as a series for the first time.
We came to know and appreciate Peters’s work through his daughter, the filmmaker Katarina Peters (1958–2021).
