About

In this exhibition the viewer is invited to look at Ann Usborne's work spanning the past 40 years. Ann Usborne was born in 1939 and was brought up in Windlesham, Surrey. From the age of 16, she took the 4-year National Diploma in Design course at Farnham School of Art, specialising in Illustration and Lettering. After two years in the United States, she worked as a graphic designer in the publicity department of Penguin Books. Picture research was her next job (finding photographs at ‘Picture Libraries' to match text) for the Daily Telegraph Magazine. In the 1980s for she illustrated, with pen and ink drawings - a series of three books; ‘A Portrait of Islington', A Portrait of Highgate' and ‘A Portrait of Hampstead'. During the 1960s Ann Usborne had started weekly classes in printmaking with Frank Connelly, (now Head of Printmaking at Morley College) at the London School of Printing in Clerkenwell, London. She continued her studies at Morley College (while working as a freelance picture researcher) under a succession of tutors: Adrian Bartlett, Susan Jameson, Richard Michell, and now with Michelle Avison.
