JENS UMLAUF – 1958
Forgotten Pictures is self-explanatory and the title of a new upcoming exhibition of the works of Jens Umlauf. Forgotten pictures, forgotten time and occurrences have passed but soon to be opened up and made available for the public.
Jens Umlauf has led a quiet and somewhat obscure life since his graduation from UdK in 1985 where he graduated as a Master in Fine Arts. Even during his time at University Jens preferred to keep away from the busy artists studio and worked quietly alone, driven and focused with no concern of what the art world was doing, at times even his professors had to visit him at home for tutorials.
Perhaps stubborn, a somewhat luxurious position, no cares or concerns Jens has over the past 30 years painted a treasure trove of ‘Forgotten Pictures’
The very few, but lucky ones amongst us may remember Jens Umlauf exhibitions in the early 90’s in Berlin, Munich and Nuremburg. The even luckier ones will have seen the Moroccan landscapes in Casablanca in 1986 at the Geothe-Institut when he worked more figurative and expressively, and very few will have seen the Italian sketches, again ‘Forgotten Pictures’ has tales to tell.
Being coaxed out of his studio, Jens has agreed to show his works, but as expected not in the usual situation. The only reason Jens has agreed to show is due to finding the right environment he feels comfortable in showing, and as expected its as unusual as you’d be able to imagine. Jens will exhibit at Voodoo55 gallery/off space and for one night only. The space is as ‘off’ as ‘off’ can be, but it fits perfectly as it fits none of the criteria of a gallery led art business today.
During this special occasion Jens will show giant canvasses, as giant as can fit into the premises. Some of these canvases have probably never been seen by anyone other than himself. They’re bold, dynamic, with momentarily decisions of the gestures through the layers of his painterly process, which reveal an abstract feast for the eyes, passing through history in a quiet Kreuzberg time capsule. Although the marks of his painterly memory turns to forms he always emphasises the essential existence to the pictorial space of the canvas.
Whilst Voodoo55 offers a large space Jens is still contemplating how he can install an 11m canvas, or whether he will build a canvas monument as a centrepiece. What ever he prepares, and as its taken a long time coming, this will be an event not to be missed; in fact it is unknown when or where Jens would be happy to next exhibit.
Jens Umlauf – Forgotten Pictures will take place at Voodoo55, 17th May 2018.
19.00 – 23.30 Uhr.
