The Florence Trust is currently offering places on its year-long studio residency programme, which runs from August 2013 and in July 2014. In the past, artists have joined the Trust at a pivotal stage in their careers and used the opportunity as a springboard to establish themselves in the London art scene. Our alumni have gone on to exhibit in museums and galleries around the world and their work has become part of major international public and private collections.
During the residency each artist gets 24-hour access to a generously sized, open-plan studio space within the Trust's Grade-1 listed, neo-gothic church. The eleven selected artists will be included in the Trust's two annual exhibitions that take place in January and July. A full-colour catalogue that profiles each artist's practice and includes a text by an independent arts writer or curator will accompany the Summer exhibition.
Alongside this, the Trust offers a framework of staff support tailored to the needs of each resident. Paul Bayley, the Trust's Director, conducts regular one-on-one sessions with each artist. Bayley has previously worked as Director of the Cornerhouse, Manchester, as well as at Tate, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Arts Council and can offer advice on artistic development as well as more practical skills, such as, applying for grants, seeking commercial sponsorship, interview and presentation skills, and working within the London gallery scene. Bayley also organises a series of gallery tours throughout the year in-order to introduce the artists to important gallerists and curators. Alongside the Director, we have a resident curator who conducts regular one-on-one meetings with our artists as well as include their work within curated exhibitions both inside and outside of the church. In addition to this, we have a Studio Manager who can assist in developing artist statements and funding applications and a board of trustees with a wealth of cultural sector experience. Just as important as this assistance is how the Florence Trust's residency programme creates an opportunity for eleven carefully selected emerging and pro-active artists to build a strong network amongst themselves and get advice through regular peer-to-peer meetings.
Today there are as many reasons for choosing to come to the Florence Trust as there are artists, but what remains true for all is that taking up a residency at the Trust represents a commitment to use the time and space to develop and grow. A commitment that the Florence Trust will match, and enhance, through our resources, support, and experience.
The cost of the studio residency is £220/£250 per calendar month, as well as what is mentioned above, this includes all related bills and insurance and is a competitive market price for a studio of this size.
