My work in the last two years has been exclusively about birds. I started being interested in how they relate to the natural environment but recently, I have become more interested in how birds form an important part of our culture, in stories, poems, songs and language. Birds can be symbols for all kinds of human traits (the wise owl, the vain peacock). We have a whole vocabulary of collective nouns for birds and a rich folklore of beliefs (‘one for sorrow, two for joy’). A recent visit to an exhibition of illuminated manuscripts has reawakened my love of the richly detailed miniature.
The work is developing in different media: paintings, prints and small complicated folding-books, and occasionally even some origami.
