About

This fall, FLAX (France Los Angeles Exchange) is pleased to partner with Tin Flats to present a series of programs focusing on the notions of process and translation—exploring the transition space in which they develop and the actions they offer. On view from Sep 7 - Nov 30, 2018 with an public opening celebration on September 6 from 6-9 p.m., the series of programs oscillate between presence and absence, tangibility and invisibility, bringing together the works of artists from Los Angeles, France and beyond. The group exhibition The Angel’s Share uses a chemical phenomenon of disappearance as a metaphor. Endless Song performance duo is grounded by the shape of the space around the performers’ bodies, making the invisible tangible. The exhibition The Tyranny of Distance navigates between two continents, with all the artists tackling the question of translation in time and space by presenting artworks in both places. These programs are complemented by weekly screenings presented in the parking lot of Tin Flats, which will be transformed into a drive-in theater.

FLAX’s residency puts the research process of the artists and curators at the center of its programs. The FLAX House host several artists per year and has become both a center for research and an artistic community. As a live-work space, the FLAX House echoes the hybridity of Tin Flats and its artists’ studios, shared workshop and exhibition space in the heart of Frogtown (1989 Blake Ave). Both places witness processes and creation.
