Helsinki-based FixC is an independent artists' co-operative launched in April 2007. It was founded as a response to what we perceived as ineffectiveness in the traditional channels' reaction to the changing situation in art distribution. The situation called for independent action and initiative from the artists themselves: new methods of organizing, improved strategies and tactics.
We generate, distribute and promote video art, media art, and experimental cinema and produce curated touring exhibitions, arrange screenings, installation exhibitions, live performances and other special venues. Many of the works in distribution have been featured in prominent international exhibitions, screening arenas and events around the world, including the Anthology Film Archives in New York City, where our first live cinema collaboration took place.
Our goal is to create a living network between individual artists and organizations. Although we mainly promote our member-artists' works, we also invite other artists to participate in our projects.
For the exhibition at Galerie Suvi Lehtinen we have produced a collaborative oneâ'channel video piece, paired with an interactive installation deriving from the same ideas, titled Jump Cut (2012). The work is based on video footage found on the Internet, which is moved frame by frame to a hand made slide film. The moving images presented through the projectors are deconstructed to their basic elements. The vibrations of the projectors amplified through contact microphones create a music that associates the slide changes to gunshots, accompanying the violent cuts of the film into which the extreme slow motion of the film transforms the illusion of the moving image.
Jump Cut at Galerie Suvi Lehtinen is supported by: the Arts Council of Finland, the Finnish Fund for Artist Exchange (FRAME), Norden, and the Northern Video Art Network (NOVA).
In association with the exhibition, FixC will also host a screening of works by Finnish, Icelandic, and Swedish artists from Northern Video Art Network titled Super NOVA on February 16, 18hr. Northern Video Art Network (NOVA) is a new web-based platform for artists working with video, media art and experimental cinema, assisting artists in promoting their work and exhibitions online. NOVA project is made in collaboration with 700IS (Iceland) and Formverk (art zone) (Sweden).
