About

Whale Rider / 2002 / 1hr&41mins / Subtitled / Rated PG

To celebrate the Great British Beach Clean 2022, we will be enjoying a film that showcases the power of the natural world and it's potential harmony with people.

Shot in a remote and beautiful New Zealand coastal town, Whale Rider is a story that follows a young Maori girl facing her tribal destiny. Maori elder Koro is chief of a clan which claims descent from the legendary Whale Rider, who rode on top of a whale (Tohora) from Hawaiki. This uplifting story follows 12-year-old girl Pai, who despite the tradition that village leaders should be first-born sons, strives to prove to Koro, her grandfather, of her rightful place.

This screening is part of our FORMATIVE FILM series.
