The Jesuit Animation School in Cairo is the first and only free school for animated film in Egypt.

About

Participants can experiment with various animation techniques on the basis of their own experience, and work collectively over longer periods of time to develop their ideas and formats. The school sees itself as a place for discussion, mutual learning and joint publishing practice in the field of animation.

The Animation school is part of the El-Nahda Association for Scientific and Cultural Renaissance in the district of Ramsis within Cairo, where independently working theatre and literature groups, media professionals and visual artists meet. The association works in an old cinema and also runs a historical film archive there. In addition, it organises a regular program of workshops, which are open for children, adolescents and young adults living in the district.

Ibrahim Saad, the head of the Jesuit Animation School will report on their work. Mostafa ElDaly and Mariam Abdelrahman, artists and graduates of the animation school, will introduce their own films and discuss their ideas about how they will continue artistic practice in cooperation with children and youth. For three weeks both ElDaly and Abdelrahman will take part in the playcity Mini-Munich, and will run the Mini-Munich Animation Studio there. In the longer run, the idea of a temporary ‘film city’ for children and youth in Cairo is being developed, and supported by artist filmmakers and pedagogues from Munich.

The other guests this evening are the artists Marcel Ralle and Veit Kowald from fistfunkproduktion, based in Munich. Together with Benedikt Gahl, Ralle and Kowald organise the independent publishing house VistVunkVerlag. Alongside the regular publication of artist books, they also produce animated films. They will show the following films and afterwards discuss their joint publishing practices in Munich:

Benedict Gahl and Veit Kowald, Rigor mortis, 2004

4 min 35 sec

Marcel Ralle and Veit Kowald, Laser Sales, Urstromquelle, 2011

12 min

The event will be in English and Arabic.
