About

Join us for the community screening launch of This place is a message, a brand new film by artists Webb-Ellis, including an introduction to the film by the artists.

In a disused chalk quarry near Gravesend in the summer of 2021, Webb-Ellis collaborated with young people from the area to co-create an imaginary world and alternative environment for learning. Using methods of philosophical enquiry, radical listening, dance, drawing and singing, the artists and young people worked together to weave a fractured narrative which became the basis for This place is a message.

Alongside the screening you can also:

  • Take part in our family-friendly art workshops, make your own zine publication and help us make a flag of your dreams and wishes for the Garden City with artists Lu Williams and Katrin Albrecht.
  • Find out more about our programme for young people, This Must Be the Place, which is exploring and shaping Ebbsfleet Garden City as it is built.
  • See the artwork created during our recent workshops with students at Ebbsfleet Academy and North Kent College.

This place is a message was commissioned by Cement Fields for This Must Be the Place - Ebbsfleet Garden City.

It was supported by Arts Council England, University of Kent and Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, and developed as part of a Paul Hamlyn Foundation funded residency with Northfleet Technology College and Northfleet School for Girls. Webb-Ellis collaborated with young people from the area with help from The Grand in Gravesend.

Cement Fields is a visual art organisation working collaboratively with artists and communities to create ambitious new art along the Thames Estuary, from Dartford to Whitstable.

This Must Be the Place is a pioneering three-year placemaking programme of research, artists residencies, and co-commissions created collaboratively with young people from and around Ebbsfleet Garden City.

This Must Be the Place is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation.
