About
FEELING THE BEAT LIVE PAINTING AND LIVE MUSIC WORKSHOP (4-7pm Sat. 2 October)
“A painting is music you can see and music is a painting you can hear” Miles Davis, legendary jazz trumpeter
South Hill Park’s ongoing Feeling the Beat arts fusion project now goes live:
Visual artists Aurelie Freoua and Chris Holley plus legendary musicians Loz Speyer, Martin Pyne and Simon Cook take you on an arts journey and rare sensory treat as they share with you ways to express music and poetry in your own drawings/paintings. This new skill will deepen your perceptions of these https://www.southhillpark.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/arts, their connections and interactions – and stay with you for life.
The workshop opens with a brief demo in which you hear and see music as it’s played, as you also watch Aurelie’s and Chris’s ‘in-the-moment’ painting happen. Then, a bit like an orchestra tuning up, you get to ‘play’ at your own art as the artists and musicians pinpoint major elements shared by art and music. Colour, rhythm, texture, tempi and shapes are focused on as you start developing your own vocabulary of mark making to express these musical characteristics in your own art. New sensory vistas will open; new insights evolve in this mind-opening, across-the-arts way of thinking and creating. Visceral and immediate, remember: there are no rules, no right or wrong – only your own personal responses.
In the final hour comes the crescendo, as - with jazzed up and sharpened senses – you create your final coda of drawings/paintings to the sounds of live music and recited poetry as they hit the air.
