Brazilian-born, multi-media artist Luiza Machado explores the relationship between ‘fancy’ and ‘fantasy’ in her solo show in our first floor gallery.

About

"Fancy" is a multifaceted term encompassing both noun and adjective forms. As an adjective, it describes something that is special, elaborate, or decorated, often implying high quality or expense, and sometimes a disdain for its perceived extravagance. It also can mean something requiring skill, arising from imagination, or superior in quality. As a noun, "fancy" refers to a fleeting, whimsical desire or idea, often imaginary or improbable. It also denotes a sudden liking, a mental image, or a decorative concept, and historically, it referred to a type of artistic composition. The term originates from the Middle English "fantsy," a contraction of "fantasie," which means fantasy. It is to the notion of fancy as fantasy that I most closely ally. Through creating fantasised images from the limited geography of my life, I get to discover what I wouldn’t otherwise; I get to the surprise.
