About
Familiar Signals is the presentation of two sound works with corresponding texts by Sybella Perry made with members of her family, that draw on sounding and listening as methods for producing and sharing spaces of intimacy. The works play with tonality as a way of exploring familiarity in contrast to unexpected events, within musical aesthetics and through everyday encounters. In twelve steps is a composition resulting from the repeated realisations of a score made in collaboration with her father, a folk musician and accordionist. The score uses twelve pitches and a series of instructions for improvising as a duo, using the standard tuning of a piano.
Four poems in sororal stereo uses the voices of the artist and her sister, as they read aloud texts describing moments of environmental change occurring in familiar places, the likeness and difference in the range of their voices plays out across the stereo-field.
Familiar Signals will be Centrum's contribution as a satellite of this year's 48 Hours Neukölln Festival.
