Group exhibition on the Face in Contemporary Society
About
From July 23rd to July 27th, SomoS proudly hosts the curation project LILITU to present a group exhibition on the significance of the Face in contemporary society. LILITU gathered the perspectives of seven artists and set up a show to foster a conversation about the face as a contentious issue that has been politicized and scrutinized. The exhibition comprises a multimedia selection of artworks spanning paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, and performances.
The exhibition, curated by LILITU, aims to question the role of the face in one’s identity. It explores contemporary phenomena such as new media, policies, and consumerism that change and affect the discourse around personal appearance and identity.
Increasingly, the face is no longer seen as part of the body, but rather a disembodied figure that has become contentious. This phenomenon results from hyper-connectivity, over-bureaucratization, and increasingly isolating crises, diverging the connection between one’s face and identity. The Face is no longer used to understand human complexities, instead, it has become a battleground of social, cultural, and political discussion.
Collaborating with SomoS, the curation project LILITU presents EYES WITHOUT, a group show that aims to spark dialogue on what we understand as face, and its indelible link to one’s identity.
The opening of the group show will commence on July 23rd from 6 to 9 PM. The exhibition will then be on view from June 24th to 27th and features contributions from notable artists, including Amalie Smidth, Lilli Falzoi, Brenner Havelka Plessl, Lilia Kovka, Greta Dassler, Bailey Keogh, and Lee Kern. The performance, Faces by Brenner Havelka Plessl will take place on July 25th, 7 pm, and will culminate in an artist talk on July 27th.
