Playing the Picturesque
24 Sep 2019 – 14 Dec 2019
The Edge
Bath, United Kingdom
£38
This workshop takes the You+Pea exhibition as a springboard for looking at different ways in which artists can approach the idea of the picturesque.
Using painting, drawing and mixed media we will combine imagery from different sources to build up composite images of that will culminate in a discussion about the relevance of the picturesque today.
We will look at the visual history of the Picturesque from the eighteenth century to the present, taking in artists and designers such as Nash, Capability Brown and Claude through to contemporary artists working with these ideas, such as Emily Allchurch, Geraint Evans, Julie Mehretu, Corine Wasmuht, Pablo Bronstein and Ged Quinn.
The objective of the day will be to make images which fuse history and the present, the ideal and the everyday. It will combine image-making from printed media as well as some observational drawing outside if the weather permits. Whilst the workshop will initially focus on drawing, Participants are welcome to work in paint, collage and mixed media once back in the studio if they wish.
