About

Exploring Herefordshire

The title ‘Exploring Herefordshire’ was chosen with the idea of walking the
150 mile Herefordshire Trail with my sketching kit, however leg problems
have kept me inside my studio for nearly a year. An iPad and hundreds of
photographs taken on previous trips have given me a ‘fresh lens’ onto
favourite places and those who know me will not be surprised that trees and
woodland take centre stage!

Although it has been frustrating not to go out exploring, I have spent more time experimenting with paint. I have also paid attention to views from the car, especially on my journeys home from the Print Shed e.g. Night Tree I and II.

The other thread which links this body of work is the nature and quality of light. I have always been fascinated by those moments when the light and weather change dramatically, completely altering a scene e.g. Sycamore Just After Rain.

Earlier this year I was invited to join the Arborealists, a national group of
artists who depict trees, which includes Kurt Jackson and Michael Porter. I
send out a quarterly e-newsletter about my work, please let the gallery know
if you would like to receive this.

I hope it conveys something of the delight and wonder I
experience in the presence of the trees and woodland of my beloved
Herefordshire.

Richard will be in the Gallery to show you round and talk about his work. See our website for details.
